BOOK REVIEW and INTERVIEW: Double Entry by Jane Gleeson-White - Review by: Stanely Goldstein, CPA

An Exciting Book About Accounting
Before the snickers turn into full blown laughter, we will add that this work of non-fiction is also brilliantly written.  Jane Gleeson-White has not merely described the origins of our current accounting system in “Double Entry” but explains the enormous implications of the pioneering work of Luca Pacioli in 1494.

Pacioli benefited handsomely from the timing of history in his region.  In 1095 Pope Urban II called all of Christendom to war against the infidel thus launching the Crusades.  A major by-product of that phenomenon was the enormous growth of the city-republics of Northern Italy:  Pisa, Venice, Florence and Genoa.  Pacioli also credits Boethius (an overlooked hero of history; he conceived the concept of the “Wheel of Fortune”) for the mathematical underpinnings of the world of commerce at that time.  One wonders how, with all of that talent available, Italy could have become the backward pawn of Europe today.
